Sotomayor, House & Howarth led the offense in Rochester win

Abby Sotomayor

United Women’s Soccer (UWS) announced their first-ever Team Of The Week yesterday in an effort to recognize the individual performances across the nation in the pro-am league. Three New England Mutiny stars - forward Abby Sotomayor, midfielder Riley Houle and team captain Kate Howarth - were selected to the weekly honor roll for their efforts in the team’s season-opening 5-1 win over the Rochester Lady Lancers.

“Congratulations to Abby, Riley and Kate,” said New England Mutiny owner Joe Ferrara, Jr. “They really were on the same page and at this point of the season, that’s worthy of recognition.”

The New England offense clicked from the outset against Rochester, scoring five first-half goals. Sotomayor (goal, two assists) assisted on the first two goals of the match scored by Howarth, while Houle (goal, assist) had an especially strong day working in the playmaking role. The strong performance out of the gate by the attacking trio bodes well for the Mutiny’s next home match this Saturday, when they host the Lancaster Inferno at East Longmeadow High School (7:00 PM kickoff).

Last season, New England and Lancaster split the season series in UWS East Conference action. Each team won on the road last year, with the Inferno’s 1-0 victory over the Mutiny on Saturday, May 22nd proving to be a bitter pill to swallow. In a tight match that saw both sides battle it out for the full 90 minutes, a well-orchestrated free kick decided the match. As the first half was to conclude, Costa Rican international Carol Sanchez’s game-winning volley gave the visitors the victory.

“There’s kind of a rivalry building between us two teams,” said Mutiny Head Coach Joe Abele. “We always play each other very, very tough. But I think our women are up to it. Its going to be a good battle.”
