Five-time East Conference champions change primary home venue; re-sign key vets Maurer & Riviere

SPRINGFIELD, MA (04/01/10) - The opening kick-off of the Summer 2010 season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) will see the five-time East Conference champion New England Mutiny take on a stacked Boston Aztec U-23 side in a Northeast Division match at Northampton High School on Saturday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. The Mutiny are undefeated in home openers at the intimate, fan-friendly venue, drawing over 1,500 fans at each match the past two seasons.

New England has also changed their primary home venue for 2010, as after their first two matches at Northampton H.S. and then, Fermi H.S. in Enfield, CT - where they take on the Maine Tide on Saturday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. - the team will move into the newly-built stadium at Chicopee Comprehensive H.S. The 5,000-seat field turf stadium with full fan & press amenities will host the last three regular season games against Seacoast United (Sun., June 13 at 4:00 p.m.), Connecticut Passion (Sat., June 26 at 7:00 p.m.) and the Boston Aztecs senior side (Sat., July 10 at 7:00 p.m.) - who are the affiliate of the Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).

The Mutiny are on a mission to take back the East Conference title won by the eventual 2009 WPSL National Champion Long Island Fury last summer, who defeated New England in the Conference Semifinal. Five preliminary signings will go a long way in helping the Mutiny accomplish that feat, as Mutiny veterans Jenny Maurer & Karyn Riviere return for the 2010 season alongside newcomers Lauren Aldred, Kelly Shimmin and Vanessa Patry.

“We had a great run at Agawam High School - hosting the Chinese National Team in 2004 and the WPSL National Championship there in 2005 - and look forward to maintaining a relationship once repairs are complete,” said New England owner Joe Ferrara. “This brand-new facility at Chicopee Comp is state-of-the-art. It has a fabulous set-up and I’m sure both fans and opponents alike will be impressed. Our preliminary signings form a solid base to build on this summer, as we will announce more players as we progress towards our opening kick-off in Northampton.”

Maurer - a Second Team All-WPSL selection in 2009 - is the lone remaining charter member of the New England Mutiny, starting as a H.S. All-American on the team when they began competition in the WPSL in 2003. From her stellar All-American career at Boston College to representing her country, the five-time All-WPSL East honoree is the cornerstone of the team heading into this season.

Riviere returns to the Mutiny after a one-year hiatus, and her leadership as a defensive midfielder and/or defender will be invaluable as the former University of Connecticut star has helped New England reach the post-season four times as a full-time starter. In 2008, she finished her career at UConn by being selected as the College Player of the Year for Connecticut as well as being named to the All-NEWISA Second Team.

Aldred and Shimmin will bring their international touch & flair to the Mutiny, as both players hail from England and are known for their skill over the ball. In 2008, Aldred finished up her career at the University of Hartford by being named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast Region & All-NEWISA Second Teams and the America East Conference First Team, while leading the team in scoring (8g, 1a) as a 5′9 defensive midfielder.

Shimmin has been very successful at putting the ball in the back of the net over her entire playing career, being honored as the 2006 Scoring Champion and Goal Scoring Champion (17g, 7a) of the W-League while ranking second all-time in scoring (40g, 28a) at her alma mater - Central Connecticut State University. A two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year (2002, 2003) and Honorable Mention All-American by Soccer Buzz Magazine, Kelly scored the game-winning goal in Central Connecticut’s first-ever NCAA Championship victory: a 1-0 win over Boston College in 2003.

Patry is coming off her stint as assistant coach for her alma mater in the University of Massachusetts, where she was a All-Northeast Region, All-Conference and both a Team MVP & captain for the Minutewomen. A very technical player who adds more height (5′9) to the lineup alongside Aldred, Vanessa’s smarts (Academic All-American), versatility & ability to play both as a midfielder and forward will give New England plenty of options this summer.

“All five of these players could very well play crucial roles for our team this summer, both on and off the field,” said Ferrara. “Jenny [Maurer] & Karyn [Riviere] know about winning & our winning tradition here at the Mutiny, while Lauren [Aldred], Kelly [Shimmin] and Vanessa [Patry] give us versatility in both the midfield and up top. All three have shown they can lead a team to victory either through their offense, defense or field leadership.”
