NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1, SEACOAST UNITED PHANTOMS 0
The home side gets an early goal from Alexis Veith and holds on for the vital victory

NORTHAMPTON, MA (07/09/11) - The New England Mutiny (5-3-2 overall, 4-3-2 East-N'East) kept their hopes for a Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) post-season berth intact via a 1-0 victory over the Seacoast United Phantoms (1-6-2 East-N'East) at Northampton High School in their 2011 home finale. The race for qualification in the East Conference playoffs will go down to the last regular season games of the season, as the Mutiny will travel this Wednesday for a possible do-or-die match at the CFC Passion (4-3-1 East-N'East), who defeated the defending WPSL champion Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (4-2-3 East-N'East) by a 2-1 score last night.

In the win over the Phantoms, the Mutiny would get something they haven't had too much this season - an early goal. Over the course of 2011, New England has had a tendency to hold the run of play out of the gate, but fail to take advantage of their chances. But not on this night, as Alexis Veith would capitalize on an error by Seacoast goalkeeper Jessica Sanderson in the 5th minute, notching the eventual game-winning goal.

Therese Smith would send in a ball from the left flank and Sanderson's hesitancy to capture the cross costed her, as Veith would give her a head-and-shoulder fake and tap the ball into the net for the early 1-0 lead. Veith would be the inspiration for the offense in this match, setting up Taylor Hartmann for a scoring opportunity only seven minutes later.

Home Page The substitutions from Mutiny Head Coach Lauren Molinaro were timely ones, as the inclusion of Meghan Cunningham and Hanna Strong into the game provided an additional spark. In the 35th minute, the two would have back-to-back chances on goal but could not convert. The home side would go into half-time up by 1-0, holding the edge in overall run of play.

The inability this season to follow through on their chances on goal would scare but not haunt New England in the second half. In the 51st minute, Veith would draw a penalty on a defensive challenge from the Phantoms but the spot kick by Karyn Riviere would be saved by Sanderson. The miss would set up a tense conclusion to the match, but the Seacoast United offense could not muster any quality chances on Mutiny keeper Jackie Fede, who registered her third win of the season.

The final regular season match for the Mutiny will be this Wednesday, July 13th at Yale University in New Haven, CT when they take on the CFC Passion for a 5:00 PM kick-off. The Passion will host the Long Island Fury (3-3-2 East-Mid-Atlantic) on Monday, July 11th in what could be a post-season elimination match for either team.
