MUTINY SUPPRESS LIBERTY 6-0

The New England Mutiny kept their playoff hopes alive in the Women’s Premier Soccer League last night as they defeated the Philadelphia Liberty 6-0 at Agawam High School.

Sydney Stoll, who plays in the fall for the University of Massachusetts, put the Mutiny in front 1-0 as she chipped Philadephia goalkeeper Rachel Norbuts in the 9th minute. Jenny Maurer from East Longmeadow received the assist on the goal. The Mutiny took the 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

The Mutiny came out strong in the second half as Meghan Cunningham took a pass from fellow UCONN teammate Erin Clark and slotted past Norbuts three minutes into the second frame. Stoll would then add her second goal of the match as she followed up Jenny Maurer’s shot and tapped it home in the 52nd minute.

Cassie Ashwell a native of Agawam returned for the first time to the high school in which she was an All-State selection for the Agawam Brownies. Ashwell would relive her Agawam days notching two goals in the second half. Devan Boundy capped the scorong for the Mutiny with her first goal in a Mutiny uniform.

The Mutiny received help from other WPSL matches as the SoccerPlus CT Reds were eliminated from the playoffs with a 3-1 loss to the Long Island Fury. The Mutiny also benefited from the Maine Tide losing by a 3-0 margin to New York AC. That result will give the Mutiny the edge on goal differential should they finish tied with New York. The Mutiny can finish with 12 points, the same as New York, if it defeats Baystate Select on Tuesday. However, they must first watch the scoreboard on Sunday as they need the Lancaster Inferno to at least tie the Atlantic City Diablos.
