WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH 3, NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1 Kate Howarth's goal in 81st minute for the Mutiny is late consolation for the visiting team ROCHESTER, NY (06/09/12) - The New England Mutiny traveled to Sahlen's Stadium to take on the Western New York Flash in a WPSL Elite match that pitted the fourth and fifth place teams in the league. With thanks to goals from Katy Frierson, Emily Van Egmond and the eventual game-winner by McCall Zerboni, the host Flash (2-2-1 WPSL Elite) came away with the 3-1 win over the visiting Mutiny (2-2-1 WPSL Elite) in front of 753 fans.
Kate Howarth would score the lone goal for New England in the 81st minute, with an assist credited to Becca Mays. With the loss, the Mutiny stays in fourth place in WPSL Elite, but are now tied with the Flash.
New England would have a bright start to the match, as Howarth and Tiya Gallegos would test the Western New York defense in the early minutes. In the 7th minute, a Riley Houle free kick would find the head of Mays but her header would go wide.
After that, however, the Flash offense would begin to slowly turn the screw on the Mutiny defense. In the 16th and 18th minutes, New England goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo would be forced to make a pair of quality stops on shots from Omolyn Davis and Tori Huster.

Frierson would fight off a pair of defensive challenges and float her shot over Alonzo & inside the upper 90 for the 1-0 score. The Mutiny would respond four minutes later, as Kelsey Hood would send in a nice service off a free kick but again, Mays would just miss with her header.
That seemed to further galvanize the Flash side, and they would continue to pressure the New England defense. In the 31st minute, Zerboni would capitalize off a goal-mouth scramble - started by a dangerous cross by Davis - to put WNY up by a 2-0 score. The score would remain 2-0 as both teams went into half-time. The Mutiny would come out in the second half with a renewed purpose, and in the 50th minute, Howarth would turn a Flash defender for a shot but it would be saved by WNY keeper Ali Lipsher. Any chance for a comeback was halted in the 76th minute, as the Flash's Stephanie Ochs would send in a cross from the right flank to second half substitute Emily Van Egmond. Her header would float over Alonzo and under the crossbar for the tidy 3-0 lead for the hosts. Howarth would be rewarded for her continued hard work and determination in the 81st minute. Mays would collect the ball on the left flank and send in a service over the top of the WNY defense. Howarth fought off a challenge from Flash defender Toni Pressley and slipped her shot past Lipsher & inside the near post for the 3-1 score. Next up for New England is a two-game Midwest road trip this Thursday and Saturday vs. F.C. Indiana (0-5-1 WPSL Elite) and league leaders Chicago (4-0-0 WPSL Elite). The Mutiny return home to East Longmeadow H.S. on Sunday, June 24th as they host WNY in the rubber match of heir season series (5:00 PM kick-off).
